Diploma in Digital Video

Fully utilize the functionality of your camera and expand your creative potential.

Video is something we experience every day, from home videos of family, our favourite TV show to the latest blockbusting movie. Video has been used to bring the world to us and tell its stories. We all have our own story that we want to tell. This course will introduce you to fundamental concepts and techniques behind video and is for any level of interest.

Often we will have a creative vision for our videos but lack the technical knowledge and understanding to achieve the potential with our movies. This course will take you from simply pointing the camera and hitting record to having full control over the creative and technical aspects of capturing video.

Your purchase now also includes a Free Starter Pack tailored to your course when  you register and attend the first Live Webinar

Lessons

1. Introduction to Capturing video

This introductory lesson establishes what Digital Video is and looks at some different styles to explore. It will also look at basic video equipment - What camera to use and why? Looking at different options from the phone to consumer cameras to pro cinema cameras and what you can achieve with them.

2. How Video works

This lesson breaks down how video is captured in our cameras and looks at an important aspect of video essential to our understanding of it – Frames per second. Saving our footage can be confusing and daunting as there are so many formats that we choose, so which is the right one? This lesson covers this in depth so that you know what to choose every time, whether you are putting a video on YouTube or planning a projection!

3. Apertures and Lenses

Have you ever wondered how filmmakers capture a sense of scale in their shots, or can get up close and personal to a subject? Lenses allow use to control what we want to viewer to see. This lesson covers the different lenses used and also covers how we can control the volume of Light in a scene using the Aperture. This also controls the depth of field in a scene, allowing shallow focus or sharpness all the way to the farthest point in a scene.

4. Compositional techniques & Movement

A huge part of shooting a successful video is planning. Envisioning our movie before we even switch the camera on will help us to create more cohesive movies. This lesson looks at planning our scenes and understanding compositional techniques. Movement is the biggest difference to composition from our still images so this is a new skill we must learn to master and is also covered in this lesson.

5. White Balance & Lighting

Colour temperature is massively important to successful continuity in our videos. Incorrect White balance will mean incorrect colours so this lesson covers how to get it correct every time. This goes hand in hand with lighting, as a correctly lit scene can influence the atmosphere and mood of a shoot greatly!

6. Shooting Video manually

In this hugely important lesson, with all this knowledge it is now time to bring all of it together and take control of the camera rather than the camera making decisions for us. Shooting fully manual gives you total creative control over the scenes you are shooting. Shutter, aperture and ISO all come together and having manual control gives you total creative control over movies!

7. Audio

Sound is 50% of our movies. It is massively important to how a movie/interview/scene works. Without audio we have nothing to work with. It also looks at the importance or audio and how to begin to sync the audio with video for a refined product.

8.Basic Cinematography

Cinematography is the creative part of video. Having established all the technical aspects of video it is now about ensuring that our videos maintain quality throughout and that we can achieve our vision by putting all the aspects of the course into place to produce a final product.
